SxSW 2008  - Day 3

We’re definitely starting to show our age. After three days of drinking, walking, and standing for hours at at time, the wear and tear is starting to show on our bodies. All four of us woke up later than usual and got off to a slow start for Day 03 of SxSW 08. We missed the day parties scheduled (free booze just wasn’t as appealing as food), and ended up running into The DollyRots on the street. After they informed us that there were NOT playing the Zude Day Party (our gig for the afternoon) we opted to spend the afternoon eating and drinking at Casino el Camino and hit up FlatStock for some poster browsing.

After catching some crap-tacular bands at Jackelopes in the afternoon, we headed down to the Flamingo for the first official gigs of the night. First up, a band Doug was into called ’Mika Miko’ out of LA. All female pop-punk, these ladies threw out alot of high energy sounds. Unfortunately, the gig hall didn’t open until late, so they only played a handful of songs.

Next up, Clipd Beaks out of San Francisco. These guys were a complete mystery to us: we hadn’t heard anything from them or about them. But, we still had to finish the beers in hand, so we opted to check out a few songs at least. And we were all glad we did. Clipd Beaks turned out to be a loud avant-garde guitar laden band with sound of the old Minneapolis Am-Rep tradition. Some serious crazy shit that made us buy albums.

On the ticket after that was a band I’ve been itching to see for a while...The Pissed Jeans from Allentown, PA. One of the oddities that SubPop Records picks up every few years just to show they’re not complete pussies, Jeans brought the damned house down with their brand of Jesus Lizard inspired guitar fuzz. Who’d have thought the Lehigh Valley produced anything decent?

A trip back down to Emo’s Annex proved fruitful, as the Meatmen were just about to take the stage. Old school punk from Detroit, these old farts put on one great show. Playing all of the old stuff as well as a few choice covers (one from FEAR, if you can believe that) the Meatmen show was one of the best of SxSW 08...which kind of scares me a bit.

At this point in the night, we all started feeling the effects of the days partying. We tried to catch a band at the Wave with Victor, but standing proved to be too much for me and Rusty, especially since we hadn’t a clue what the music was like. So, we found a table downstairs, drank another beer, and sort of watched the band ’The Crash That Killed Me’ to pass the time until Victor’s band finished.

The final show of the night proved to be a doozy. The always enigmatic Supersuckers took the stage at Emo’s Annex, and proved themselves to be one of the best god damned rock’n roll bands of all time. Friggin brilliant as always, Eddie Spaghetti and the boys put on a bad ass show mixing new music and old classics together into one Texas sized crazy-ass show. We almost didn’t get into the gig, but a little patience and guile upon Victor’s part proved fruitful once again. A great way to end the day, no doubt.

So, now we’re all in pain and doing the old man cripple dance through Rusty’s house. Only two more days to go, and I dont know if we’ll make it.
